How bank holidays affect your money
On a bank holiday, the Federal Reserve doesn’t process ACH transfers or wires, so money doesn’t move between banks. That has a few practical effects:
- Direct deposits may arrive early or late. Many employers send payroll a day early when payday lands on a holiday, but if yours doesn’t, your pay may arrive the next business day.
- Bills you pay by ACH may post a day later. Schedule payments a few days before the due date in holiday weeks.
- Check holds can last longer. Under federal funds-availability rules, holidays don’t count as business days, so a hold can stretch by a day.
- ATMs, debit cards, mobile apps and Zelle still work. Card purchases and transfers between accounts at the same bank usually go through, though some may post the next business day.
What happens when a holiday falls on a weekend
When a holiday falls on a Sunday, Federal Reserve Banks close the following Monday. When it falls on a Saturday, the Fed stays open the Friday before, though some banks close their branches that Friday anyway. In 2026, Independence Day falls on a Saturday, so the Fed is open Friday, July 3.
Columbus Day and Veterans Day
The Federal Reserve closes on Columbus Day (also observed as Indigenous Peoples’ Day) and Veterans Day, but some banks keep their branches open on those days. The stock market is also open on both.
