How credit utilization is calculated

Divide your total card balances by your total credit limits. A $3,300 balance across $10,500 in limits is 31.4% utilization. Scoring models also look at each card on its own, so one maxed-out card can hurt even when your overall number looks fine.

  • Under 30%: the common guideline most lenders and score guides mention.
  • Under 10%: where people with the highest scores usually are.
  • 0% on every card: can score slightly lower than a small reported balance, because it shows no recent use.

Frequently asked questions

Which balance do card issuers report?

Most issuers report the balance on your statement closing date, not your payment due date. Paying the card down a few days before the statement closes lowers the balance that reaches the credit bureaus.

How fast does lowering utilization help my score?

In most scoring models, utilization has no memory. Once lower balances are reported, usually within one or two billing cycles, your score can reflect it.

Should I close a card I don’t use?

Closing a card removes its limit from your total, which can push your utilization up. If the card has no annual fee, keeping it open and using it lightly is often better for your score.
