This student loan calculator compares two ways to repay federal student loans: the Standard plan, with a fixed payment over 10 years, and the income-based Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP). Enter your balance, interest rate and income to see your estimated payment, how long you’d be in repayment, and how much you’d pay overall. You can also add extra payments to see how fast you could be debt-free.

How RAP payments work
- Your payment is 1% to 10% of your adjusted gross income, depending on your income level, divided by 12.
- It drops by $50 a month for each dependent, with a $10 minimum payment.
- Interest your payment doesn’t cover is waived, and your principal goes down by at least $50 a month.
- Any remaining balance can be forgiven after 30 years of qualifying payments.
- Loans taken out on or after July 1, 2026, can use only RAP or a tiered Standard plan.
Rules can change, and your servicer has the final word. Check your options at StudentAid.gov. Private student loans aren’t eligible for RAP.
