What comes out of your paycheck
- Federal income tax: based on 2026 brackets from 10% to 37%, after the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly).
- Social Security: 6.2% of wages up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500.
- Medicare: 1.45% of all wages, plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (joint).
- State and local tax: varies widely. Several states, including Texas and Florida, don’t tax wages.
- Pre-tax deductions: traditional 401(k) contributions lower your income tax; health premiums and HSA payroll contributions usually lower both income tax and FICA.
This is an estimate. It doesn’t include tax credits, other income, local taxes or newer deductions, so your real withholding will differ. For W-4 decisions, use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator.
