How CD interest is calculated

APY already includes compounding, so value at maturity = deposit × (1 + APY)years. A $10,000 one-year CD at 4.65% APY grows to $10,465. For a 6-month CD, use half a year: about $10,230.

Frequently asked questions

Is CD interest taxable?

Yes. It’s taxed as ordinary income in the year it’s credited, and your bank sends Form 1099-INT if you earn $10 or more.

What if I need the money early?

Most banks charge a penalty measured in days or months of interest. If you withdraw very early, the penalty can reduce your principal. A no-penalty CD avoids this.
