How to read your results

  • Today’s dollars: the future balance adjusted for inflation, so you can judge what it will actually buy.
  • 4% withdrawal estimate: a common rule of thumb for how much you might withdraw in the first year of retirement. It’s a starting point, not a guarantee.
  • Employer match: free money. Contribute at least enough to get the full match.

Ways to boost your retirement savings

  • Raise your contribution by 1 percentage point each year or with every raise.
  • Use catch-up contributions once you turn 50.
  • Keep investment fees low; index funds are a common choice.
  • Consider a Roth IRA or HSA alongside your 401(k). See our 401(k) vs. Roth IRA guide and HSA vs. FSA guide.

Projections assume steady returns, which real markets don’t deliver. Review your plan at least once a year.
